Driving in and around the United States
This star-spangled country is made for road trips, with wide open freeways and scenic routes galore. Rent a car in the United States and you’ll have the freedom to explore at your own pace.
The freeway network here is vast, with high-speed roads connecting major towns and cities. The maximum speed limit varies between states, so keep an eye out for local road signs which will be marked in miles per hour, rather than kilometres.
Toll roads are also in operation in some regions – these are sometimes known as turnpikes, particularly around the East Coast. Some toll booths take cash while others accept only credit or debit cards, so it’s worth planning your route in advance to make sure you’re fully prepared.
Most road rules in the US are similar to those in Canada. You’ll drive on the right-hand side, mobile phones are not permitted while driving and all passengers are required to wear a seatbelt. Driving under the influence is also a criminal offence.
If you’re planning on driving through multiple states there are plenty of options. You might want to start in the Pacific Northwest, where you can take Route 101 down the west coast through Washington, Oregon and California. Or you could head east, following the iconic Route 66 from California to Chicago in Illinois.
If you’re heading to the West Coast you’ll find Los Angeles is well connected and the perfect springboard for visiting other destinations. Journey north along the I-5 to San Francisco or CA-99 N to explore Yosemite National Park.
Follow the I-40 E inland towards Arizona, where you can marvel at the Grand Canyon, or branch off onto the I-15 N to discover the dazzling lights of Las Vegas.
Meanwhile the East Coast offers plenty of spectacular driving routes of its own. Here you’ll find the world-famous cities New York, Washington D.C. and historic Boston are connected by the I-95.
This road snakes all the way down to Florida, the Sunshine State, where you can soak up some sun on the beaches of Miami or visit the thrilling theme parks of Orlando.
